“Our family doesn’t have many daughters, so of course they’re more precious. In Avah’s generation, there are only two girls but plenty of boys. I can’t help favoring her a little more,” Ben admitted, then quickly added, “But I love my son just as much. They’re both my children—equally important. Still, no matter how you put it, some level of bias always exists.”
He pulled Jane into his arms, his tone softening with a hint of apology. “I know I’ve been a little biased. It’s been over twenty years, and I still haven’t changed. But our son is easygoing—he doesn’t mind. His sister even took over his responsibilities so he could do what he wanted, and he still dotes on her. Let’s not dwell on that. What do you need to pack? I’ll help you.”
Jane gently pushed him away with a smile. “There’s not much to bring. The child doesn’t lack anything. As for me, just a few changes of clothes will do. I can pack an hour before we leave.”
“Big brother! Big brother!”
Tim’s voice cut through their conversation as he hurried in. Lilian followed closely behind, trying several times to stop him but failing.
“What’s going on?” Ben asked, glancing at them.
“Nothing, really. It’s late—I won’t disturb you,” Lilian said, attempting to pull Tim away again. But he shook her off and strode forward, dropping onto the sofa with a long-suffering expression.
