When they returned to their lodgings, the main hall was brightly lit, while the guest courtyard was illuminated only by the streetlights.
It was obvious without asking that the elders were gathered in the main hall, waiting for them to return.
After the car came to a stop, Jennifer got out carrying a stack of account books. She saw Jane coming out of the house, and Jane smiled when she saw them.
“You two are back early today. Have you eaten yet?”
“Mother Jane, the Young Master doesn’t have any social engagements tonight, so we’re back. We haven’t eaten yet,” Jennifer replied.
“Then hurry inside and eat. We just finished eating, too. We didn’t know when you’d be back, so we left some food for you. It’s still warming in the kitchen. It’s perfect to eat now.”
“The autumn temperature in Havenmill is about the same as winter where we live.”
