“Titus, I’m your uncle. I even held you when you were a baby,” Lennox said anxiously. “It’s been thirty years since we last saw each other. I have so much I want to tell you. Your uncle is inviting you to dinner. Won’t you give me that honor?”
By family hierarchy, Lennox was Titus’s paternal uncle, though several generations removed.
Lennox and the former family head were cousins from different branches of the family. Lennox’s ancestors and Titus’s great-grandfather were half-brothers. However, Titus’s great-grandfather was born to the first wife and had been designated as the family’s successor from a young age.
Lennox’s ancestors were born to the second wife and therefore had no claim to the position of family head. Their line became a collateral branch of the family.
Even though they shared the same father, the difference in status meant they could never inherit leadership or stand at the center of power.
That reality was something Lennox had never accepted. His father had felt the same way during his lifetime, secretly pulling strings and resorting to underhanded tactics. Growing up under that influence, Lennox became equally determined to seize power for himself.
He wanted to rewrite the long-standing rule that the position of family head always passed through the direct bloodline.
