Joaquin immediately pulled out his phone. “There are no morning appointments available tomorrow,” he said. “I’ll book one for the morning after. You can both rest here tomorrow.”
“No appointments already?” his mother asked. “So many doctors and none available?”
“That’s how big hospitals are,” Joaquin replied. “There are afternoon slots, but your check-up requires fasting. It’s better to go in the morning so you can eat right after. If you wait until the afternoon, you’ll be starving all day. Waiting one more day won’t hurt.”
Mrs. Legare sighed. “If you married Dr. Pollock, she could help Mom get an appointment. Son, if you still like her, try harder. It’s easier when you have connections. You can sleep with her first—get her pregnant. Once she’s far along, she’ll have to marry you.”
“Mom,” Joaquin said, face darkening, “Aitana has never even gone out alone with me. How would I even get the chance? She works every day, and when she’s off, she helps at her family’s clinic. I don’t get opportunities like that.”
He couldn’t force himself on her. If he dared, his life would be over. The Pollock family wouldn’t spare him. And Aitana would absolutely call the police; she wasn’t someone who would quietly endure that.
He had worked too hard to build his career. He wasn’t going to throw it away or offend the Pollocks. He still needed his medical license, after all.
