“The collateral branches,” Landen continued, “are always lacking in some way. Not that they’re completely incapable—but with each generation, they fall a little further behind.
“Sometimes, a capable one appears. But even then, they can’t break through the rigid family rules.”
He paused briefly before continuing.
“You know the Farrell family in Jensburg—the one Sonny’s mother manages? In that family, the head has always been a woman from the direct line.
“If there are several daughters, the eldest takes over. Strangely enough, the family’s best genes often concentrate in one daughter, while the others are always slightly inferior.
“To preserve the family’s prosperity, their ancestors created ironclad rules that must be followed generation after generation.”
Jennifer listened quietly.
