“You spent half the day chatting with my grandma and playing with the kids. They were all so happy. I should be the one thanking you.”
Aitana replied softly, “Seeing them happy made me happy too. Honestly… I haven’t felt that kind of joy in a long time. Your family is so big and lively. It’s rare for a family to gather like that every weekend.”
Her own family could hardly even gather for holidays. Someone was always on duty, performing surgery, or tending to emergencies. They’d chosen a life in medicine—saving lives came first, and everything else took a back seat.
Alex smiled.
“Next week you finally have a day off. We can go on a road trip. It’ll be even more fun. The kids already heard about it and they all want to tag along.”
What started as an invitation from Grandma would almost certainly turn into a full family outing. He wouldn’t get much alone time with Aitana, but watching her slowly open up to his family mattered more to him. The more comfortable she felt with them, the closer she came to lowering her guard around him.
What he wanted most was for Aitana to stop thinking that his privileged background made them unequal. If she let go of that burden, he’d have a better chance when the time came to confess.
