Aitana stood at the door, quietly watching Alex ride away. Only when he disappeared from sight did she turn and step back into the clinic.
Her second uncle and aunt had noticed her return but hadn’t interrupted her conversation with Alex earlier. They’d simply stayed inside, waiting for her.
On her second uncle’s examination table sat two baskets of fruit—freshly picked, the leaves still glistening with dew.
Second Uncle Pollock looked up from his paperwork and said with a smile, “Aitana, Alex brought these over just now. He said they’re seasonal fruits from his family’s garden, freshly harvested. His grandmother specifically asked him to bring two baskets for you. He said they’re for their own consumption—hardly ever sprayed with pesticides, completely organic. You can eat them without any worry.”
At this time of year, the main seasonal fruits were persimmons and pomelos—simple, common fruits, yet beautifully arranged in the baskets.
Second Aunt Pollock fetched a small fruit knife, cut open one of the pomelos, peeled off the thick rind, and carefully separated the juicy flesh. She handed a segment each to her husband and Aitana. “Come on, taste this pomelo. See if it’s sweeter than the ones sold in the market.”
