She still refused to believe—even in death—that Alex liked her.
Carlos chuckled. “Alright, let’s stop guessing. If he’s really interested in you, he’ll come back again, just like Joaquin did. If this is the only time we see him, then I’m just overthinking. Come on, let’s go downstairs. He’s waiting on the first floor.”
After a few steps, Carlos glanced sideways at her. “But, Aitana, if he really is interested in you, what would you do? Would you accept him?”
“No,” Aitana answered without hesitation. “The York family’s threshold is too high. I could never marry into it. And he’s too handsome—I wouldn’t be able to hold on to him. If I get married, it’ll be to a man who matches our family, someone who can handle my crazy schedule and my New Year shifts.”
Carlos felt relieved. He’d worried his sister might be dazzled by Alex’s looks and background. Plenty of girls in Wiltspoon dreamed of marrying into the York family and becoming a mistress. Thankfully, his sister was sensible enough not to.
Aitana continued, “Marriage works best when families are equally matched. Marrying up only makes you suffer, and marrying down doesn’t help the poor. It’s best to marry someone on the same level.”
