Alex thought back to their first meeting. At first, Aitana had looked a little surprised. But soon after, she treated him no differently from anyone else. She even seemed eager for him to be discharged. Maybe, to her, his minor injury looked like he was just taking up a hospital bed. After all, big hospitals were always short on space.
He knew Aitana had been hurt before. She had dated her first boyfriend for two or three years. After climbing the social ladder, the man dumped her because she couldn’t help his career. Alex had even seen photos of the man then and now—handsome back then, but heavier and ordinary now.
Whether man or woman, Alex thought, gaining weight ruins everything. If Aitana saw the man now, she’d probably feel disgusted. Maybe then she’d be ready to start a new relationship.
Alex believed her coolness toward him came from that heartbreak. She hadn’t truly let go of her first love yet.
“No need to rush,” Alex said. “I’ve got a lifetime to impress her. One day, she’ll look at me with eyes burning with love.”
