That night Aitana was on duty and running herself ragged. Alex waited at the nurses’ station, caught a glimpse of her, and managed only a few words.
He had also brought her fruit, exchanging another few brief pleasantries before she disappeared into the whirlwind of her rounds.
After that, she was gone.
It was late at night before Alex finally drifted off to sleep. On days when he didn’t have to work, his routine had boiled down to eating and sleeping. He felt like he was living the life of a pig.
Resting so much during the day left him wide awake at night. If he went to bed late, he would naturally wake up later, so he’d started setting an alarm to force himself up.
Before sleeping, Alex had told the butler to bring two breakfasts the next morning. He wanted to surprise Aitana with one.
Joaquin had already confessed his love to Aitana. Alex liked her too, and he didn’t want to keep hiding it. Sending breakfast was his way of showing, to her and to everyone else, that she was special to him.
