Aunt Pollock stayed quiet.
Joaquin had been showing up for two years. He wasn’t a bad young man, but Aunt Pollock couldn’t ignore his family background. He was the only one in his family with a promising future, yet he still had to support his parents, brother, and sister.
Uncle Pollock, as a man, didn’t think as cautiously as his wife. He simply saw Joaquin as a hardworking, self-made young man. Without family backing, Joaquin had carved out a life for himself in the city—bought a house and a car outright, saved money, and surpassed many of his peers. Uncle Pollock liked him for who he was, not for his background.
The Pollock family believed in helping each other, so when Joaquin occasionally mentioned supporting his brother and sister, Uncle Pollock saw it as normal. That’s how his own family operated.
“Thank you, Uncle Pollock,” Joaquin said.
He set the bouquet down on the corner of the medicine counter, then walked inside to help Aunt Pollock dispense prescriptions.
