“Mom, did you win any money?” Winnie asked casually.
“No. I’ve had terrible luck—I keep losing,” Mrs. Francoeur said in frustration. She always seemed to lose when playing cards with her siblings.
The odds of winning were actually high. Either she was good at cards or simply lucky. And since she was wealthy, losing a little money to her own siblings didn’t matter much. Most of the time, she treated it as giving them a small benefit.
“Mom, you always lose money. Why do you still gamble?” Winnie asked.
She even suspected that her relatives might be teaming up to take advantage of her mother.
“I’m bored,” Mrs. Francoeur replied. “Playing cards is the only thing to do. You’re so busy—you don’t have time to keep Mom company. Your uncles and aunts are retired and have time, so we play cards or go shopping. But there’s nothing I need to buy. We don’t lack anything at home.”
She preferred cards to shopping. Shopping made her tired, and she never saw anything she actually wanted.
