Leonidas listened quietly and thought back to something River had once said.
“Repaying a favor too much only brings harm,” River had warned.
Leonidas realized River was right — his wife still cared too much about her relatives and couldn’t truly let them go.
River had once suggested that if they wanted to see people’s true nature, they should pretend Yantail was in financial trouble and ask those same relatives to repay the money they’d borrowed — just to see who would actually return it.
It would help Mrs. Gaudreault understand who genuinely cared and who only knew how to take advantage of them.
After comforting his wife, Leonidas reminded her of that suggestion.
She was quiet for a moment, then sighed. “Let’s talk about it later. They wouldn’t believe it right now anyway.”
