Old Mr. Brown shot her a sharp look. “And even if Hank divorced Jessica, remarried, and had another kid, that child would be more than ten years younger than Sonny. How would that help Sonny?
“Sonny’s cousins—those who aren’t blood-related—are all extraordinary kids. They’re the best of the best. If Sonny ever runs into trouble, those cousins could solve it with just a few words.
“What about us? What can we really do for him? Or even his brothers and sisters? I’m tired of explaining this to you. I thought you understood, but now you’re acting up again because of Hank’s remarriage.
“Our son doesn’t want a divorce or a second marriage. He’s focused on raising Sonny. That’s his choice. Why do you care so much? One child is enough if he’s good enough.”
Old Mrs. Brown curled her lip. “I wasn’t serious about Sonny needing brothers. I just used that as an excuse to talk Hank into divorcing and remarrying.”
Old Mr. Brown snorted. “Hank doesn’t want to remarry, so what’s the point of bringing it up? It’s his life. He’s in his thirties—almost forty—don’t you think he knows what kind of life he wants?
