When Liberty went out with Sonny, people often mistook her for his older sister.
Life had taken its toll on Hank. The stress, the running around—it all showed. He looked at least ten years older than Liberty now. Sonny even noticed a patch of white hair on his dad’s head.
“You don’t need to carry that. It’s not heavy, and your dad can still handle it,” Hank said, gently taking the bag from Sonny. Even so, the boy’s thoughtfulness warmed his heart.
Old Mr. and Mrs. Brown trailed after them, clearly reluctant to see Sonny go.
“Can’t you stay a little longer?” Old Mrs. Brown pleaded, holding his hand tightly. “You’ve only been here half a day, and now you’re leaving again. I’ve been waiting since summer started for you to come. If your vacation was longer, you could stay with us. Grandma misses you so much.”
Her voice trembled with emotion. She looked older too. Her once dark hair had more than doubled in silver strands since six years ago.
Sonny smiled reassuringly. “Grandma, my best friend Titus is coming from Annenburg. He hardly ever gets time off, and he’ll only be here for a few days. I promised I’d spend a week with him first. After he goes back, I’ll come stay here for ten days, maybe even half a month.”
He squeezed her hand gently. “Think about where you want to go and make a plan. When I come back, I’ll go with you anywhere you want.”
